The volunteers of El Fénix
Here are a few tidbits from the farm about the team.
Our fantastic worker, Tomasz, left the farm this week. He was a great help in the field, friendly with the workers, hardworking, and wonderful with operations. It was a pleasure to have him for as long as we did. Charlotte is still here in Colombia and is doing a great job. She has finished designing the impact assessment survey and interviewed many of our neighbours to collect data for it. With this information, Charlotte and Miguel have determined the key households to be distributed to over the next few years. And of course, our beloved Miguel is still working hard at the farm, handling all our coffee.
The farm now has over 12,000 coffee trees planted on about 6 hectares of the property. Most recently, Geshas and Wush Wush trees were planted on the top lot of El Fénix. Also, about 130 guamo trees were planted around the farm - these will help with the nitrogen balance in the soil. In the nursery, there are over 2,000 Pink Bourbon seedlings to be put in the ground over the next few months. There are also over 5,000 Wush Wush babies growing with hopes to be big enough to be planted closer to January 2018.
For those of you who have your name on a tree, some of the trees have already started to blossom. They are still far too young for their flowers to make delicious coffee, but it is fascinating to see them healthy and growing. Eduardo and Miguel are also doing a little bit of experimentation with naturals over this summer.
The El Fénix Kickstarter coffee has been picked, dried, and bagged up. Some of it is already on the water headed to roasteries around the world. And remember, if you are going to be serving El Fénix coffee in your café, we will help you announce it to the world so please let us know.
We hope that everyone is having a great time out there! Drop us a line in the FB group!
